Although the United States Navy permanently moved out in 1992, a lot of the signs are still in place. Tourist literature still refers to the JEST, Cubi and MAU camps. It’s been 24 years!
We didn’t walk through the jungle. We drove through it. Only insane people will walk through the jungle without a professional guide.
Before we entered the jungle area yesterday, we stopped and took pictures of the Dayak fruit bats flying above the treetops. There’s a road on the other side and people were standing around on one side of it, taking pictures of the bats hanging from the high tree limbs.
Our next stop was the JEST camp. On the way, a monkey was sitting in the middle of the road, but she moved before I could get a decent picture of her. Before arriving at the camp, the road had a sign that says “Welcome to Tree Top Adventure”. I don’t know if that’s the new name or what it’s called because the signs conflict with each other.
On the way to Zoobic Safari, a few more monkeys greeted us. We weren’t able to stop and attempt photos of any of them. The roads weren’t wide enough and the roads weren’t in great condition. We didn’t stay long because we started this trip in the early afternoon. It starts getting dark soon after 5pm this time of year. The jungle is a scary place when it’s dark. No, they don’t have the roads lit up with lights at night.
To get good pictures, I need a real camera, not the camera in my mobile phone. I snapped a few pictures of the lions near the opening of Zoobic Safari, but only one photo was decent enough to share. I wish I’d had more time. The map (on a big sign) looked interesting.
We didn’t have enough time to do much of anything. That’s okay because this was basically an exploratory trip for me. I’ve lived in Olongapo City for almost 10 years and this is the first time I went to those areas in the jungle. I’d been to the George Dewey Medical College near them a few times while my younger son was going to nursing school, but the last time was more than three years ago.
I plan to return to that area, or one area at a time, some day in the future. I need to make sure I have plenty of money on me because none of the attractions are free. Sure, I’ll have to walk a lot, but I need the exercise. Walking around in my neighborhood is boring and it’s hard to do without being disturbed by other people and the dogs in the street.
