The Type of Wine I Prefer is in my Refrigerator
I’m not a wine connoisseur. I have no idea how you’re supposed to drink it. I don’t know anything about letting it breathe or how to pour it into a wine glass. I simply drink it and I don’t care what kind of glass it’s in. I don’t like the taste of most wine and I’m trying to learn to drink more wine, if only for the health benefits. Josie, my wife, likes to drink it when she has a hard time sleeping and it definitely puts her to sleep. If I drink more than a glass or two, I start feeling drunk, not sleepy.
Red Wine or White Wine?
I’ve never tasted a white wine that I liked. The same goes for Josie. Neither of us like the full-bodied wines. We like the light red wines if you don’t count the wines labeled as Sangria. We both like Sangria and it’s what we both prefer. I have a box of Franzia Fruity Red Sangria in the refrigerator now. I don’t know how true it is to the Sangria that originated in Spain and Portugal, but it’s definitely sweeter than other red wines.
The Franzia wines are often denigrated as cheap wines, designed for the sole purpose of getting drunk. Sure, some people will use it that way because it’s less expensive. As far as I can tell, the quality is just as good as the more expensive wines. I’ve had the Sangria and I’ve had the Sunset Blush and I’ve had those flavors in more expensive brands and I can’t tell the difference. Perhaps a wine enthusiast can, but I can’t and neither can Josie.
We can’t get anything Franzia in Olongapo City or the neighboring Subic Bay Freeport Zone in the Philippines, but that’s okay. Even if we could get it in Manila, it isn’t worth the trip. There are plenty of other wine brands, both local and imported, available at the Royal Subic store at the freeport zone. I’m no good at remembering the brand names, but I’ve had several different brands over the last several years. None of them have been expensive brands.
Getting Drunk on Wine
I can tell you from personal experience, getting drunk on wine isn’t a pleasant experience. It only took once (in 1979) to convince me to avoid a similar experience. If I want to get drunk, I’ll go straight to “spirits” (like rum, whiskey and vodka). I don’t like using beer to get drunk either and probably because it takes way too long.
Josie’s been drunk on wine on many occasions and it’s hilarious to watch her. She and a few of her sisters (out of six) will drink together in the Philippines and they’ll all act super silly before the night is over, with Josie leading the pack. She’s not the oldest sister and she’s not the youngest (somewhere in the middle) but she’s the sister with the strongest will. I’m not sure if it’s something that came naturally or something she learned from me. Anyway, she leads the pack in just about everything, not just drinking games.
