How to Tie a Necktie – For People who Still Wear Neckties

April 18, 2017

Most people call it a necktie. Some just call it a tie. I like to call it a noose, as in used to hang yourself.

I wore a necktie while wearing a two specific uniforms while I was in the Marine Corps. It wasn’t very often. If I try, I can probably count every occasion.

I then wore a necktie at one job after I retired from the military. I was a manager and all managers had to do the shirt and tie thing except for one day a week.

How to Tie a Necktie for the Marine Corps

I don’t know what knot they taught us when I was in boot camp. They made us remember it was a two-block tie for inspections and that was about it.

I suspect it was a four-in-hand knot because the instructions look right for it. According to the uniform regulations, almost any type of knot was acceptable. The drill instructors didn’t tell us about it. That was probably because they wanted every uniform to look exactly the same.

It didn’t matter. I later bought and wore a clip-on tie unless I was in an inspection. The only occasion for wearing a necktie was when wearing the Service A or Service B uniform. Take off the coat with the Service A and you had the Service B.

The uniform of the day, 99.9 percent of the time at regular duty stations was either the Service C or the utility uniform. The Service C was the same as the Service B, but with a short-sleeve shirt.

How to Tie a Necktie as a Manager

I worked as the Information Technology Manager at a telemarketing company for about 14 months (I quit for medical reasons while another company was taking over). If I worked the normal daytime hours, I had to wear a shirt and tie every day except Friday. On Friday, I could wear a manager’s polo shirt and blue jeans.

You could call me Captain Clip-on. I never tied a necktie once. It was always a clip-on. I would work during the daytime every other week. At night, I always wore a manager’s polo shirt and blue jeans.

I probably tied a noose (necktie) around my neck four or five times over the course of 25 to 30 years. Those things are dangerous when you’re anywhere near a commercial-grade shredder.

How to Tie a Necktie is Useful Knowledge

I wish Ties.com existed when I was lot younger. Nothing looks better in a two or three-piece suit than an elegant necktie knot, properly tied.

Wearing a clip-on tie with an expensive suit is bad form, all the way around. You might as well wear athletic shoes to go with it.

That reminds me. Cheap dress shoes won’t work either. Whatever they’re called, those shiny plastic shoes are very noticeable as exactly that. Go with leather or don’t go at all.

Unless it’s required for employment, most people won’t wear suits. I can understand that in hot and humid climates but not in cooler climates. They look so much nicer, with or without neckties, than the casual wear I’ve usually seen.
