I now have memories of swimming in two Hawaii locations. The first was way back in the 1970s on the island of Kauai and the second was today on the island of Oahu. Although I probably had short swims at other beaches in the 1970s, I don’t remember them.
When my family lived on the island of Kauai in the 1970s (some of my teenage years), we spent many Saturdays and Sundays at one beach or another. The beach I remember the most is the beach at Lydgate Beach Park.
While I can remember many times being at a beach without the family, I can’t remember the names of those beaches. It’s been more than 40 years. It’s amazing if I can remember any of the places from that period of my life.
The swimming area consists of two rock-enclosed artificial ponds. I don’t really remember how big they were, but I know they were bigger than any one of the artificial lagoons I saw today. I don’t know what the park looks like today. There was hurricane damage a few years ago.
You can read more about it on Wikipedia’s Royal Coconut Coast page.
My entourage and I traveled to the Ko Olina Beach Park this morning. My entourage consists of my wife, Josie, my son, Jon and Jon’s wife, Cathy. I drove our new old car because Josie didn’t want to drive and the other two don’t have licenses yet.
There are four artificial lagoons in this beach park. I think we were at the second one. After more than 15 minutes looking for a place to park, we sat in the shade for a while before venturing into the water. Unlike the ponds I mentioned above, these are not fully enclosed. That’s about the only difference between a pond and a lagoon, I guess.
I don’t plan to make very many trips to any of those lagoons. It’s more than a 30-minute one-way drive to get there. My next beach trip should be at a north shore beach, which will be much closer. Technically, the Helemano Military Reservation we live on is part of the north shore area, just with a Wahiawa zip code. Wahiawa is a small city.
When someone asks me where the best vacation spots are in Hawaii, I try to steer them away from Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. There are a lot of other places, on other islands as well as Oahu, that are a lot less hectic.
I haven’t been back in Hawaii long enough (a little over three months) to make too many recommendations. Traveling to any of the other islands isn’t something I plan to do. When I was young, I did a lot of swimming, snorkeling and boogie board riding on various beaches. I don’t care to do anything but swim these days.
