I have Google AdSense running on this website but it doesn’t generate a lot of revenue for me. It covers a little more than my hosting plan at Digital Ocean. I’m only paying $10 a month for a single droplet. I could switch to another droplet and cut it down to $5.00 a month, half the cost but also half the RAM. That’s too close for comfort.
The issue I’m faced with makes staying at my current provider the logical choice until I find something acceptable.
Neocities is friendly enough. Even though their free hosting allows for only 100 MB of space, I only have about 11 MB of static files for this website so far.
The issue, which I’ll repeat later, is that I have to be a supporter at $5 a month to use a custom domain name. I’ll explain why that’s important toward the end of all this.
If push comes to shove (yeah, I know, a cliché) I’ll pick one or the other. I prefer simple ways to upload files, like FTP.
Firebase is a Google product. The free tier (“Spark”) seems okay, but I have no idea what all pricing details mean. The 100 simultaneous connection limit seems a bit low, especially when overzealous search engines stop by.
If I was a newbie, I’d probably jump on this. I’m not a newbie.
It seems like most static website hosting providers want up to $10 a month for the things I’m already paying $10 a month for. I’m not limited to static website hosting where I’m at now.
My domain name has backlinks pointed to it. If I move the website without a custom domain name, those backlinks will disappear. I don’t fancy the idea of contacting people to ask them to change their outbound links.
My domain name reaches six years of age this month. Six years that disappears along with all the backlinks. You see where I’m going with all this?
I have no problem giving up Google AdSense completely if I can find a free host that will allow me to use my domain name. I don’t need to make any money if I’m not spending any.
Paying for website hosting is a pain as it is. I have to physically deposit the money in a specific local bank and then use PayPal to pay the monthly bill. If I can remove that step from my monthly payday routine, I’ll be enormously happy.
If anyone can point me to an easy place to move my website to, without me pulling my hair out, please let me know.
