It’s almost sacrilegious to waste a good cup or mug of coffee like that.
It’s even worse when something important gets damaged.
Spilling coffee happens to the best of us and it happened to me this morning. I was distracted while I was reaching for the mug on my computer desk.
It shouldn’t have been there anyway, but that’s beside the point.
This is the first time this has ever happened to me. Spilling coffee on a computer desk, I mean. I’ve spilled coffee before, but it was always some place where the only issue was cleaning up the mess. The only thing I’ve ever spilled on a computer is blood and I’ll get to that in a minute.
Luckily for me, I’m using a laptop computer on a computer desk designed for a desktop PC. I’ve had the desk for at least eight years. The center of the rear half is recessed for a regular monitor. There’s a keyboard tray under the front, which I don’t use. I have the computer sitting on the desk above it.
The coffee mug was sitting on the right side, next to the recessed part. Apparently, it was a little too far to the left and all it took was a nudge to make it spill to the left. The liquid missed the computer completely and then dripped toward the keyboard tray and then on to the floor, briefly slowing down on a lower shelf.
It took about 30 minutes to clean everything up. I violated one of the oldest rules in computing. Never keep liquids near the computer. At least I was smart enough to put it in a place where spilling coffee would have had no effect on the computer itself. It would have taken a special kind of stupid to make that happen the way things are set up here.
A few years ago, I cut myself on the edge of the keyboard tray. I didn’t even know it happened until the blood started dripping down on the keyboard. I was using a desktop PC back then and it was a wireless keyboard, a little more expensive than a generic keyboard. It was ruined, of course.
It’s the same computer desk I’m using now, by the way. Before today, I never spilled coffee or any other liquid near a computer. Other people, standing near my desk at work many years ago, did the spilling for me. Clumsy people tend to do clumsy things and they were always knocking one thing or another over and on to me or something I was working on.
