Social Networks and Me – Saying Goodbye to the Useless Ones

- June 2, 2015

social networks I don’t know about you, but I’ve had it up to **here** with the social networks I rarely take part in. I’m talking about Twitter, LinkedIn and various other social networks other than Facebook and Google Plus (and I’m tempted to drop Google+ as well). The only saving grace for Google Plus is that I actually get some web traffic from it sometimes. Most of my social web traffic comes from Facebook, which is where I hang out because it’s where the people I know hang out.

Social Networks, Notifications and Numbers

It’s annoying. No, it’s more than annoying. I can check to see how many followers I have on Twitter (most seem like bots) and I’ll gain five in a day and a few days later, lose those five. Things like that happen all the time. As far as I know, only one person that I know personally follows me on Twitter.

LinkedIn is another annoying network. It serves me no purpose other than publicizing my articles. I’ll be removing it as one of my social networks today as well. I get way too many notifications about job promotions and birthdays for people I barely know (and only online).

Notifications, from any of the social networks, annoy the hell out of me. I turn them off and somehow they get turned back on again. I have absolutely no need to be notified of birthdays and other “special” events from Facebook or anywhere else. If someone is important to me, I already have that information. I don’t need to be reminded for three days in a row.

I have this website connected to multiple social networks, but Pinterest isn’t one of them. I took part in that nonsense more than a couple of years ago and I’m still getting notifications from them. It’s time to ax it.

Enough is Enough

Most of the social networks I belong to, including Facebook, are little more than distractions. Maybe some people like to be distracted or maybe they don’t have anything else to do with their time. I don’t know. I’m not one of those people. I have a lot to keep me occupied elsewhere.

To be honest, Facebook is the only one, of all the social networks, that I really care about (and that care is very little). The biggest reason is that I now use Facebook Messenger on my mobile phone more than I ever used Skype on my PC. And that’s without video (they don’t support video in the Philippines yet). The second reason is my children and their families use it. I couldn’t care less about everyone else. Really.

I am so over social networks. At one time, pundits said that I had to publicize my website on all the social networks to get as much coverage and web traffic from them as possible. I call bullshit on all that nonsense. I rarely get web traffic from Facebook and very rarely from any of the other social networks.

It’s probably my fault. I refuse to put a lot of effort into anything that yields questionable results. I’m not a mover or a shaker or a so-called influencer. Most people have no idea who I am and that’s okay. I’m not here to win a web popularity contest. With less than 1000 real human visitors per day, I’m in no danger of becoming popular anyway.
