Roland Abante (Aka Bunot), Future Philippine Superstar

Roland Abange (Bunot) My wife, Josie, spotted the video of Roland Abante (aka Bunot) doing a cover of Michael Bolton’s “To Love Somebody” on Facebook.

He was singing Karaoke and he wasn’t wearing a shirt. Apparently, he never expected anyone to take him seriously.

The video went viral on Facebook before going viral on YouTube.

Bunot is from Cebu, Philippines but I don’t know if he’s from Cebu City proper or one of the outlying areas.

Bunot Goes Viral

I don’t know when it all started but I do know when the YouTube video was uploaded and that was on November 18, 2014. When I watched it earlier, it had more than 1.5 million views.

According to several news sources, Bunot was invited to The Ellen DeGeneres Show in the United States and he already has a manager. All this is happening really fast. I don’t think any videos of him were uploaded before the beginning of November but I could be wrong. I couldn’t find any earlier videos.

When I wrote about Lyca Gairanod, I had no idea she’d go so far, so fast. She’s already a “little superstar” and you can read more about her at the Lyca Gairanod Wikipedia page. I expect Bunot will go farther and faster since he isn’t as restricted as a minor would be.

Here’s the video that went viral:

If you do a search for either “Bunot” or “Roland Abante” on YouTube, you should come up with a few original videos. Some are just “repeats” or videos included within other videos, like news videos. Look for anything uploaded by Tricia Maricel Mendoza and you’ll get the real deal and not just another copycat uploader.

I suspect this is far from the last time we’ll see an everyday Filipino citizen gain notoriety through one of the social networks. I won’t be surprised to see two or three more next year.
