Restaurants at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone and in Olongapo City

If you exclude the fast-food joints, there are still more restaurants than you can imagine in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ) and Olongapo City areas. Unlike the hotels, I don’t actively seek new restaurants. Although there are plenty of good restaurants in Olongapo City, I prefer to eat at restaurants at SBFZ because of the lack of parking available in downtown Olongapo City.

Favorite Restaurants

My wife, Josie, and I rarely eat out. If we do it twice a month it’s an occasion to remember. When we do eat out, it’s at specific places that serve a specific type of food.

At one time, my favorite pizza place was the Xtremely Xpresso Cafe on Dewey Avenue at SBFZ. That was before a new Puregold building was built and an S&R New York Style Pizza place found a home in the outer ring. Big stores and malls have satellite shops ringing the outside of the building, even if that ring is rectangular. The main Puregold building is like that at SBFZ and SM City Olongapo (just outside the Magsaysay Drive gate) is like that.

There’s another S&R pizza place and another Puregold store within the Harbor Point mall at SBFZ now. We prefer to go to the one at the Puregold building because there we aren’t wading past hundreds of people like we do at the Harbor Point mall.

If we want to eat pizza, we go to a pizza joint. If we want to eat chicken, we go to a chicken joint. KFC is still the best chicken joint around here and there’s a KFC restaurant in more places than I can shake a stick at, including the Puregold building, the Harbor Point mall and SM City Olongapo.

Breakfast Restaurants

A Filipino neighbor, a former SeaBea, swears by a place called “Dryden’s” in the Barreto barangay. I have yet to go there. I haven’t tried a breakfast meal anywhere in a long time, if you leave out McDonald’s and Jollibee. McDonald’s has the egg and sausage McMuffins and Jollibee has the pancake sandwich.

I can remember going to a Wimpy’s years ago and being disappointed in their lack of options. Maybe it’s different now, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Places where I’ve Eaten and Places where I want to Eat

I honestly can’t remember all of them. In Olongapo City, I’ve been to Max’s Restaurant in Olongapo City. I’ve been to Sam’s Pizza (way back in 1983) and I’ve been to places that have since moved to SBFZ. I haven’t been to Wimpy’s since 1986 or 2006 (I really don’t remember).

At SBFZ, I’ve been to all the usual suspects (fast food) and an all-you-can-eat place in the Harbor Point mall (that I can’t remember the name of) that didn’t have many choices at all. I’ve been to Gerry’s Grill on Waterfront Road at SBFZ. I’ve been to the Meat Plus Cafe.

I haven’t been to Texas Joe’s House of Ribs on Waterfront Road and I really want to go there. It’s where all the expats from the Bataan, Pampanga and Zambales provinces go to meet up from time to time.
