Making Money with My Article Site, Using Blogging Software

I’ve been making money with this article site for more than three years. I want to share some thoughts if you’re thinking of trying something like this.

This is the second incarnation of my original website that started out as a “blog” and then morphed into an article site. I made money with that one for more than five years before shutting it down. The best of what I had on it is here, updated of course.

Making Money is Easy with the Right Software

I use WordPress but you can use any content management system or blogging-specific software. Try one or try several, but use the one you feel the most comfortable with.

I like WordPress for a couple of reasons. First, the media manager and its integration with the editor is top-notch. Better than what other software packages can do. Second, the plugins and themes can turn a basic website into almost anything.

Making Money with the Right Hosting Service

I wrote about the places I recommend for hosting. The idea is to spend less for hosting than you can make in return.

With this site, I pay $10 a month for hosting at DigitalOcean. By the way, that’s a referral link. If you sign up with them, you get a $10.00 credit and I get a $25.00 credit when you eventually spend that much. Anyway…

What I earn every month with this site varies. It’s safe to say I make at least three times what I spend when I’m not doing so well. I will shut off any website I control that doesn’t make a profit.

Making Money with Advertisers

The easiest way to make money is with Google AdSense. The last time I checked, I had made over $34,000 using AdSense. I’ve used other advertisers, like Infolinks, over the years but none of them pay like Google.

Getting accepted for AdSense isn’t as easy as it used to be. Even if you’re accepted, it can take longer than you may expect if you’re not living in the United States. Google sends a pin number through regular mail. Any mail from Google to me in the Philippines can take up to three months.

There are various advertising methods, including affiliate advertising, but I won’t get into them. Your mileage may vary and all that.

One of the reasons I stay with WordPress is because I can easily change advertisers or advertising methods without having to edit templates.

Making Money with an Article Site

I’m sure there are people out there who can make money with a blog, as a blog. I don’t know any of them. The people I know (or used to know) do the same thing I’m doing even if they don’t realize it. Some people think blogging and writing are the same and they’re not. Similar, but not the same.

Traditional blog entries are chronological, like a diary. A certain subject can span multiple entries. In some cases, there isn’t any text – a blogger can post some type of media instead.

The entries on an article site are usually self-contained and they always contain text. I always recommend article sites over blogs. When an article outlives its purpose or is no longer relevant, it can be removed with disrupting the rest.

You’re not limited to one article site. The more specific you are with one, the easier it is to be specific with another. It’s hard to be a blogger on more than one site. It’s not hard to be a writer on more than one site. Do you understand the difference?
