I Always Lose Weight when I’m the Only Person Living at Home

- April 1, 2017

lose weight Let me emphasize that. I always lose weight when I’m the only person living at home. There could be many reasons for it, but only one of them counts. It’s because I don’t like to cook.

I will force myself to cook if I’m cooking for more than just me. That’s what I did when my younger son, Jon, was living at home and my wife, Josie, was living elsewhere.

That was several years ago. Today, my oldest sister-in-law, Florian, does most of the cooking for me even when Josie’s here.

I Lose Weight because I don’t Eat what I Like

It happened in 2015 and it’s happening now. Josie was gone for nearly six months in 2015. She was visiting our older son, Joseph, and his family at an Air Force base near London, England. The details aren’t important. I lost weight because I didn’t eat the things I like to eat. If something had to be cooked, I didn’t eat it.

I was living all by myself in my three-bedroom, three-bath house. For safety’s sake, I kept two out of three doors to the outside locked 24 hours a day. I left one back door open during the day so another relative could come in and clean, do laundry and other household chores. I let Florian cook breakfast for me, but only breakfast.

I’m pretty sure I lost five kilograms (about 11 pounds). I’ve since gained it all back.

Am I Losing Weight Now?

Josie’s on vacation with relatives from her side of the family. They’re due back on April 8. I don’t feel like I’ve lost anything since she’s been away so far, but they’ve only been gone since March 26. It won’t be a week until tomorrow. The total time away will add up to just under 14 days, if you include the day of departure and the day of return.

That’s not a lot of time.

My daughter-in-law, Cathy, was no help at all until recently. When she bought junk food, I couldn’t resist some of it. A couple of weeks ago, I started refusing all kinds of junk food. I may lose two kilograms by the time Josie gets back, but I’m not counting on it. And I’m talking about fat, not water weight.

I Lose Weight because I don’t Like to Cook

I will not cook for myself unless there’s nothing at all I can eat without doing so. The microwave oven is my friend. Boiling something (like eggs or franks) is okay but anything more is a chore.

Since I don’t like to cook, I will eat things I don’t particularly like. Here’s a short list of what I’ll eat, just to stay alive:

The things I like to eat don’t come from that list. I like almost anything cooked with chicken.

I like salads, but it’s hard to find fresh iceberg lettuce that will last very long. Romaine lettuce will last longer, but I don’t like it for anything but as sandwich topping.

Basically, if I can’t make something in less than 15 minutes, I won’t bother.
