Have you ever had Food Poisoning? A Bad Memory and a Relapse

siopao - food poisoning I had a bad case of food poisoning back in 1988. It took 24 hours to get over it. Of course, I never want to repeat the experience. I never seem to learn. Certain food items trigger familiar symptoms I’d rather avoid and I have to be hit over the head to wake up.

It seems a certain fast food franchise’s asado siopao triggers a sort of relapse. Last night and into today, I’ve suffered from an extreme fever that only acetaminophen (paracetamol) can tame.

Food Poisoning in 1988

It doesn’t matter that the health community calls it foodborne illness now. A rose by any other name and all that nonsense.

I was en route from Okinawa to North Carolina, USA. I stopped in the Philippines to pick up Josie, Joseph and Jonathan (my family). My in-laws didn’t have the type of food I would eat, so Josie sent her mother (Nanay) to get corned beef at the market. She returned with ground beef, already cooked. I ate it with some rice.

Later in the evening, I was drinking beer and eating pork rinds (chicharrĂ³n baboy). By morning I had diarrhea and started vomiting. Josie wanted me to go to a local hospital but I opted to ride it out. I must have drunk more than 20 gallons of water over the course of the day. She said the “Red Horse” kicked me but I knew better.

Food Poisoning since 2006

It took until today to put the blame squarely on the siopao. In some locations, that fast food franchise must leave it out too long. The last time I had a mild case of food poisoning, it was the same – asado siopao. I’ve had chicken siopao a couple of times and never experienced anything like this.

I ate two asado siopao last night (not knowing my daughter-in-law wanted one of them). I developed a fever at 3:30 am. I took ibuprofen and it went away. After eating lugaw (rice soup) for breakfast, it returned in full force and ibuprofen had no effect. Josie sent an in-law to a nearby pharmacy to get paracetamol and an hour later, the fever broke.

I’m not taking any chances. I’ll be taking it at 3-hour intervals until tomorrow.

I’ve finally learned my lesson. I’m boycotting anything from that fast food franchise from now on.

Update September 23, 2016

I’ve removed the name of the restaurant on the advice of a local attorney (a relative). Unlike the United States, you can get in big trouble for saying something negative online about a company or individual. Even if it’s true.
