I’m going to try again, this time following the advice of someone who succeeded. I need to lose around 60 pounds or 27 kilograms.
I actually tried doing it almost like Bob did when he got started. I didn’t start until after I bought a scale for weighing myself at the beginning of September. While I could have done it without a scale, I wouldn’t have been able to track my progress.
Like Bob, I followed the 16:8 protocol. That’s 16 hours fasting and eight hours eating. Obviously, I wasn’t going to eat for eight hours. I only lasted two or three days because of all the birthdays that took place this month. Resisting lumpia and pancit when the meat ingredient isn’t pork is difficult for me. I don’t have a problem resisting Filipino-style spaghetti made with sweet spaghetti sauce and pork.
That’s called intermittent fasting. I did it for years when I was in the military without even knowing it. Most of the time, I would eat no more than once a day. Of course, that was before I got married and started raising a family. It’s a lot easier to eat food when the food tastes good.
I’m not kidding myself. There’s another birthday party coming up tomorrow for one of my nieces. Again, I’ll see lumpia and pancit, along with all the food I refuse to eat. Resistance is futile. No, my next attempt will start on Sunday, the first day of October. October is easier than any other month – there’s only one party to resist.
I don’t care about protocols. I’ll be eating breakfast and only breakfast as often as I can get away with it. I have two people who won’t think before offering to feed me. My wife, Josie, will offer real food and my daughter-in-law, Cathy, will offer junk food. That’s just the way they are. I still have to have a good talk with them.
It’s hard to find clothes to fit me here in the Philippines. I’ve accumulated polo-style shirts and white t-shirts that barely fit around my girth. Once my big belly starts to shrink, I’ll have a lot more to wear than I can wear today. That includes blue jeans that are one size too small in the waist (damn, I’ll have to rewrite that article after this).
I’m already following a low-carb, medium-protein, high-fat routine. It doesn’t seem to have any effect other than keeping me from gaining weight. I’ll continue to follow it so that my fasting efforts aren’t wasted. It doesn’t make sense to lose weight and then put it back on because of bad eating habits.
Many ancient cultures fasted regularly. Some still do. I want to say it’s religious fasting but I really don’t know. It’s not the same as medical fasting. People who fast regularly are usually healthier than those who do not.
Bob used to suffer from obesity and diabetes. He had a heart attack, followed by surgery. Because of his fasting routines, he no longer suffers from diabetes. He’s no longer taking medicine. I don’t think he’s still considered obese either.
