The Eighties and Why It’s My Favorite Decade in History

The Eighties When I speak of the eighties, I’m talking about the 1980s. I feel I have to be specific for various reasons. I chose a picture of Ronald Reagan because he epitomizes the decade, having been the president from 1981 to 1989. He wasn’t a perfect president, but most of the other American presidents had (and have) flaws as well. Yes, some retired presidents are still living.

Some of the best music came out in the eighties, especially the rock ballads. Some of the best movies were made, without the aid of CGI to make things look better.

Happenings in the Eighties

You have to put things in perspective or nothing matters.

I turned 20 in 1980. Ronald Reagan was elected as the President of of the United States in 1980. My older son (adopted) was born in 1980.

I was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Arizona, from 1981 to 1982. I was then stationed in Hawaii from 1982 to 1984. I met my future wife while deployed aboard a Navy ship in 1983. I was stationed again in Yuma, in 1984.

I married my wife, Josie, in 1985. My younger son, Jonathan, was born in 1985. In January 2020, Josie and I will celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. Today, we’re living (temporarily) with Jonathan in Hawaii, where he’s stationed with the Army. Jonathan is 33.

I was stationed on Okinawa, Japan from 1987 to 1988. Speaking to the Chairman of the Soviet Union in 1987, in front of the Berlin wall, Ronald Reagan famously said, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” The wall was demolished in 1989, under his watch.

Eighties Music

The eighties were the years of rock ballads and big hair. While I don’t remember all the bands, I remember the most famous of them:

Some of the ballads are so famous, my children’s generation is still listening to them.

Eighties Movies

Some of the actors and actresses of today (and some retired from acting) were way more popular in the eighties. Here are just some of the actors:

And the actresses:

There’s no way I’ll spend all day listing all the actors and actresses of the eighties. Those are just some of them that stand out in my memories. And then there are the movies themselves. Some famous franchises began in the eighties. Some began in the seventies but were in full swing in the eighties.

I Can Do This All Day

Just like Captain America. But I won’t. Most of the music I like to listen to from the eighties can be obtained for free on YouTube. With the right service, you can download the music attached to the videos. It may not be the best quality, but it’s free.

Most of the old movies from the eighties can be found on video streaming services. You probably have a better chance of finding them on the free services than on the premium services.
