I have a pre-existing soft spot for Spidey. I collected all the comic books with him in them, that I could afford, back in the 1970s.
In comic books, Spider-Man first appeared in 1962. Deadpool first appeared in 1991. I have never seen a Deadpool comic book.
At least, in my opinion. They both like to throw out wise cracks and insults while they’re fighting, but Deadpool is a bit, uh, raunchier. In the comic books, the villains have told Spider-Man to shut up countless times. I don’t know about Deadpool because I haven’t read a single comic book (“Heavy Metal” doesn’t count) since 1977.
Peter Parker is clean-cut. Wade Wilson isn’t. Even though I’ve never been a mercenary (nor will I ever be), Wade’s military history makes the character sit better with me than the kid still in high school. That’s probably because I have a military history as well, though not as colorful as his is supposed to be.
Spider-Man’s super powers include being able to cling to walls, being able to jump really far, and being really strong.
Deadpool only has one super power. He can’t die (well, as long as his head is still intact, I suppose). The immortality super power trumps every other super power as far as I’m concerned. It really doesn’t matter if his uncovered appearance can make a freight train take a dirt road.
I like them both but I’m not looking forward to the next Spider-Man film. This is the third film version of him. If they change the character again, I may refuse to watch any stand-alone Spidey film after that.
I am looking forward to the next Deadpool film. I don’t even care if it turns out to be good or not, as long as Ryan Reynolds still gets to play the character.
