Carbonated Soft Drinks, or most of them, should be Avoided
In some places they’re called sodas. In other places they’re called pops. In yet other places they’re called soda pops. They’re carbonated soft drinks and they should be avoided. I rarely drink carbonated soft drinks these days because I’m very particular about the ingredients. When I was much younger, I drank a lot of sodas because they were convenient and I didn’t know any better. The vending machines were everywhere. It didn’t matter which brand I preferred because it changed from month to month. When I got older, I realized that any soda didn’t quench my thirst enough to bother with them when I was thirsty.
The Last Time I Drank Carbonated Soft Drinks
Late last year, while I was in the United States, I found myself drinking sodas on occasion because it was the only thing available to drink at the house I was staying. We often ran out of bottled water.
I’m a coffee and tea kind of guy most of the time, but I can’t make either of them with tap water. Tap water is nasty. Even with bottled water, it has to be the kind that’s purified, not the bottled river water you can find.
The very last time I drank soda there, it was when I was particularly thirsty. I poured the soda over ice cubes and it still didn’t water it down enough to tame my thirst. I ended up driving several miles to buy bottled water. I didn’t even realize at the time that the ice cubes I had used were made with tap water or I would’ve driven to the store sooner.
It was at that time that I decided I wouldn’t drink carbonated soft drinks ever again unless the ingredients were as natural as they could be.
What’s in Carbonated Soft Drinks?
The basic ingredients of sodas are carbonated water, a sweetener of some kind, and flavoring. Some sodas have natural ingredients while others have artificial sweeteners, artificial coloring, artificial flavoring and preservatives.
Most of the flavors of the major brands of carbonated soft drinks aren’t any good for you at all. All you have to do is read the labels to verify you’re putting little more than toxins into your body.
There is no substitute for sugar. High fructose corn syrup comes from the corn that farmers grow on overused land and has no nutritional value whatsoever. The artificial sugar substitutes are poison.
I have no idea what “artificial flavoring” or “artificial coloring” really is when that’s all it says on the labels. In my opinion, if anything other than natural flavors are added, then it’s something I shouldn’t be drinking.
There are so many other, better things to drink that are natural by design. Pure coffee and tea, as well as pure fruit juices, are easy to find. Sometimes more difficult to find, you can still get carbonated soft drinks with natural ingredients.
