Binge Watching Movies and Television Series

June 21, 2016

Binge watching is something people do when they want to catch up, whether it’s a movie and its sequels or a season or two of a popular TV series. It’s not something I like doing and I’ve only done it once intentionally.

With my wife, Josie, and my daughter-in-law, Cathy, it’s a completely different story. I’m pretty sure they prefer binge watching to watching one thing at a time. I base that assumption on experience, of course.

Binge Watching Movies

I don’t think anyone in my family has binge watched movies in years, many years. If you ask me what movies were involved the last time it happened, I’d have to say it was either the “Star Wars” movies (episodes four through six) or “The Matrix” movies.

If I wanted to go through that ordeal again, considering movies tend to be longer than two television series episodes, I’d probably do it with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with “Iron Man”.

Binge Watching Television Series

I don’t know if you can call it binge watching or not when it’s only two or three episodes. Josie refuses to watch any television series if it’s only one episode at a time. If I want to watch one, I have to wait until at least two are available, otherwise I’ll end up watching everything twice.

In 2015, while Josie was visiting with our older son and his family in England, she watched the first five seasons of “The Game of Thrones”. She’s waiting for season 6 to be complete before she watches the entire season, probably in one day.

Cathy has watched a lot more recently. I’m pretty sure she binge watched “Arrow” and “The Flash” until she caught up to the current episodes being broadcast. She recently did it again with the first five seasons of “Teen Wolf” and is anticipating the next season, soon to start airing.

In the meantime, Cathy’s watching all of “Farscape”, to be followed by “Stargate SG-1” and “Stargate Atlantis” (never mind “Stargate Universe”). Of course, she has to watch the movie that inspired the Stargate series as well as the straight-to-video features that followed.

The last time I binge watched anything intentionally was in 2006, while waiting for my house in the United States to sell. I had rented the first six or seven (I really don’t remember) seasons of “Stargate SG-1” on DVD from Netflix. I couldn’t watch anything else because we had already emptied the house. The only thing I could use to watch anything was my laptop computer.

Television Series I won’t Watch at All

I don’t like “Game of Thrones”. I watched a few episodes of the first season when my younger son, Jon, was in the Philippines. He continued to watch it but I wouldn’t.

Some people like “The Walking Dead”. I don’t. I gave up on it when the main character’s wife died. I mean, he killed his partner because of her and she ended up dying later anyway. I can’t describe the level of suck I experienced with the last episode I watched.
