Back to the Beach but without the Party

Driftwood Beach Resort As I’ve written before, I’m not fond of the beach. Or I should say, I wasn’t until the last time I went to the beach. I think it’s because I like swimming but I don’t like being around a lot of people.

A week or so ago, I spent a couple of hours at the Driftwood Beach Resort and I didn’t feel like I was being crowded by hundreds of Filipinos I didn’t know.

Driftwood Beach

I took a few pictures at the Driftwood Beach Resort and my daughter-in-law took a few more while I was out swimming in the ocean. If I can gather them together, perhaps I’ll post a few on a dedicated page for them. Or maybe not. It depends on how much stuff I’m trying to get done. I’m old (55) and it takes me longer to get things done than it used to take me to get things done.

I’ve lived in Olongapo City, Philippines, for nearly 10 years. I arrived at the beginning of April in 2006. During most of the decade, I’ve avoided going to the beach with relatives. They always want to have a party of some kind at the beach (usually a birthday party). The party usually consists of eating, drinking (including a lot of alcoholic beverages) and gambling (mahjong, tong-its, etc.) and sometimes it includes karaoke. It’s just plain annoying.

When I spend time at the ocean, I want to swim and that’s all I want to do. I don’t want to lie in the sun and get a tan or any such nonsense. One of the reasons I don’t look as old as other people my age is because I avoid the Sun as much as I can. Sunshine causes wrinkles. I’m not averse to a game of volleyball while I’m there, but I can only remember one time they set that up.

Beach Party

Unless you’re a member of my generation, you probably won’t understand the reference. The first “beach party” movie came out in 1963 when I was two-years old. Thanks to the magic of reruns in the 60s and 70s, I saw most of them before my family moved to Hawaii in 1974. Here’s a quick list:

The Back to the Beach movie of 1987 was a parody of those movies and probably better than they were. I had my younger son watch the first one with me a few years ago and he laughed his ass off. He wasn’t born until 1985.

I like Swimming

I didn’t realize how much I liked swimming until my last trip to the Driftwood. We went early in the morning and it was still early when we left. There weren’t many people there until about a half hour before we decided to leave. There wasn’t a party involved.

I lived in Hawaii from sometime in 1974 to sometime in 1977, for about three and a half years. I spent at least two weekends at the Lydgate State Park on the island of Kauai back then. I had a dark brown tan by the time me and my family moved again. I spent most of my time swimming.

Ocean water swimming is a lot different from fresh water swimming. I’m buoyant enough to float and look at my toes sticking out of the water in the ocean. Not so in fresh water.

I need to go back regularly, if only for the exercise.
